This artist's book by photographer Andreas Gursky was created as part of his exhibitions at the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig and the Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst in Duisburg. Therefore, however, the artist deliberately chooses not to use the form of a classic catalogue; rather, he invites the reader on a journey of discovery through his pictorial cosmos. In addition to iconic works from his oeuvre and previously unpublished photographs, private snapshots are also shown, mostly taken with a mobile phone, which reveals a lot about Gursky's approach. In addition, works by his father and grandfather tell of the family's long photographic tradition and draws references to Leipzig. Finely curated quotations from Musil's 'Man Without Qualities' interweave the different levels and build bridges to the individual photographic works. By leafing through this artist's book, new axes of vision open up, chains of associations draw ever deeper into Gursky's pictorial worlds and reveal a new and also more personal insight into Gursky's oeuvre.

The Ruhr region often served Andreas Gursky as the setting for his early works during his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy with Bernd and Hilla Becher. The titles of these works bear witness to his forays into the surrounding area: ‘Ruhrtal', 'Mühlheim a.d. Ruhr, Angler', 'Krefeld, Hühner', 'Duisburg, Brücke', 'Ratingen, Schwimmbad, to name but a few examples. A selection of these early small-format works from the Ruhr region now welcome visitors to Duisburg and introduce them to the world of Andreas Gursky, which unfolds fully in the following rooms through his well-known large formats.
